30+ of the Prettiest Places in Costa Rica You Have to See to Believe

Costa Rica is a country that doesn’t do “ugly.” Everywhere you turn, there’s something beautiful—whether it’s a misty cloud forest, a beach so perfect it looks like it was photoshopped, or a jungle waterfall that practically begs you to take a refreshing dip. If you’re looking for the most jaw-dropping, postcard-worthy places in Costa Rica, you’ve come to the right place. Here are 30+ of the prettiest spots in the land of “pura vida.”

1. Río Celeste

This electric-blue river in Tenorio Volcano National Park looks like something out of a fantasy movie. The color is so unreal that locals used to believe the gods painted it. Science eventually stepped in with an explanation, but let’s be honest—magic is more fun.

2. Monteverde Cloud Forest

A misty, mystical world where you can walk on suspension bridges through the treetops, spot rare birds, and feel like you’re living in a real-life fairytale. Bonus points if you see the elusive quetzal!

3. Nauyaca Waterfalls

Located near Dominical, these double-tiered waterfalls are straight-up stunning. The best part? You can actually swim in the emerald-green pool at the bottom.

4. Isla Tortuga

White sand, turquoise water, and palm trees swaying in the breeze—yep, Isla Tortuga is peak tropical paradise. Take a boat tour from Puntarenas or the Nicoya Peninsula and spend the day snorkeling and living your best island life.

5. La Fortuna Waterfall

A dramatic 230-foot waterfall that crashes into a jade-colored pool. It’s a bit of a hike to get down, but once you see it, you’ll realize it was totally worth every step.

6. Playa Conchal

Unlike most beaches, which are covered in sand, Playa Conchal is made up of millions of tiny crushed seashells. It also happens to have some of the clearest water in Costa Rica.

7. Bajos del Toro

A hidden gem in the cloud forest, this striking waterfall plunges 300 feet into a moss-covered canyon. The hike is steep but rewarding, and the moody rainforest vibes are unbeatable.

8. Poás Volcano

Ever wanted to peer into an active volcano? Poás has one of the largest craters in the world, complete with a bubbling, sulfuric blue lagoon that looks peaceful but is definitely not a good place for a swim.

9. Uvita’s Whale Tail Beach

At low tide, this beach literally forms the shape of a whale’s tail. It’s also part of Marino Ballena National Park, where—surprise!—you can actually see humpback whales from July to October and December to April.

10. Cahuita National Park

Where the jungle meets the Caribbean. This coastal park has powdery white sand beaches, turquoise water, and a hiking trail that winds through dense rainforest teeming with monkeys and sloths.

11. Santa Teresa

A dreamy surf town with golden beaches, epic sunsets, and just the right amount of boho-chic vibes. The waves are great, the food is fantastic, and the whole place feels like one big chill-out zone.

12. Manuel Antonio National Park

A tiny national park with some of the most beautiful beaches in the country, plus hiking trails where you’ll see monkeys, sloths, and toucans. It’s small but mighty.

13. Isla del Coco (Cocos Island)

Often called the “Galápagos of Costa Rica,” this remote island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site packed with incredible marine life. If you’re a scuba diver, this is your holy grail.

14. Osa Peninsula

This wild, rugged peninsula is one of the most biodiverse places on Earth. It’s also home to Corcovado National Park, where you might see scarlet macaws, tapirs, or even a jaguar if you’re (very) lucky.

15. Rincón de la Vieja National Park

A land of bubbling mud pots, hot springs, waterfalls, and volcanic craters. It’s like walking through a geothermal wonderland, minus the crowds of Yellowstone.

16. Irazú Volcano

This massive volcano offers panoramic views all the way to both the Pacific and Caribbean on a clear day. Its green crater lake makes it one of the most surreal landscapes in the country.

17. Samara Beach

A laid-back, palm-fringed beach that’s perfect for swimming, paddleboarding, or just doing absolutely nothing.

18. Celestial Arch (Arco Iris Waterfall)

A little-known waterfall in the Bajos del Toro region that forms a rainbow at certain times of the day. It’s a tough hike, but the reward is pure magic.

19. Playa Biesanz

A small, hidden beach near Manuel Antonio that feels like your own private paradise. Calm water, soft sand, and just the right amount of seclusion.

20. Nicoya Peninsula

A Blue Zone (where people live exceptionally long lives) with endless beaches, rolling hills, and some of the best sunsets in the world.

21. Playa Santa Teresa & Mal País

Surf heaven with some of the most breathtaking coastline in Costa Rica. The sunsets here will have you questioning why you don’t just move here permanently.

22. Barra Honda Caves

An underground cave system with stalactites, stalagmites, and dramatic limestone formations. Perfect for adventurers who don’t mind a little darkness.

23. Tortuguero National Park

The “Amazon of Costa Rica,” this maze of rivers and jungle is where you can spot manatees, caimans, and sea turtles nesting on the beach.

24. Playa Ventanas

A beach with natural sea caves that “breathe” with the tides. When waves crash through the openings, they create a dramatic, echoing effect.

25. Rio Savegre

One of the cleanest rivers in Central America, great for white-water rafting, birdwatching, and jungle hiking.

26. Cerro Chirripó

Costa Rica’s highest peak (12,533 feet). If you make the climb, you’ll be rewarded with views that stretch to both the Pacific and the Caribbean.

27. Golfo Dulce

One of the few tropical fjords in the world, home to dolphins, whales, and lush jungle-covered hills.

28. Playa San Juanillo

A stunning crescent-shaped beach with crystal-clear water and two different coastlines to explore.

29. Montezuma

A funky little beach town with waterfalls, tide pools, and a relaxed, artsy vibe.

30. Palo Verde National Park

A paradise for birdwatchers, with wetlands that attract thousands of herons, egrets, and crocodiles.

31. Hacienda Barú

A private reserve near Dominical with hiking trails, tree platforms, and incredible wildlife.

32. Bioluminescent Bay in Paquera

At night, the waters of Paquera Bay glow with bioluminescent plankton—one of nature’s coolest light shows.
